The Khiladi opted for a Royal Choice some time back, and in all respects has come out, twice Shininng. (The extra 'n' is in keeping with the trend of -numerology / vaastu in the present Bollywood Times).

Maybe Vipul Shah needed a little comfort in his insecurity. But, guess Akshay Kumar must have nodded to that with his trademark grin and swagger.

Have told this once, and am repeating it again - Akshay Kumar has single handedly turned himself to the Biggest AND the Safest Commodity that has been ever exported out of Bollywood!
And that is THE FACT.
Whether you like him or not.

The man who drove the behemoth called Bollywood in 2007, is back in the driving seat again.
The magic is yet to rub off.

Singh is Kinng opened up to a record figure of 60 Crore in the FIRST WEEK. Could anyone point out another Star who can hold a candle to this Khiladi?
Please.
Numbers DO NOT lie.And if its the Tube that you are talking about, The New Kingg on the Block has ensured his Royalty there too.

The macho show that's had its fair share of controversies, Khatron Ke Khiladi(man, that's some de ja vu), Akshay is being paid (rumored!) Rs.1.5 Crore per episode, Ladies and Gentlemen.

The other King was rumored to have it somewhere in the mid 50's (Lakh, if you please).
And it has rubbed on everyone associated with him, too.

Vipul Shah, who's now shooting London Dreams has sold his movie for a mind boggling 120 Crore, BEFORE release.

True, the marketing dynamics have changed. But, the facts are out there.

Along with sharing some groovy licks with Snoop Doggy Dog and screen space with Stallone in Kambaqt Ishq, our Akki has come a long way.

And is taking Bollywood along with him to levels that would have been unimaginable five years ago.
And between all this, The Singh is celebrating its dream run.

And Sinnging his way into a million hearts more. With a lil help from Snoop Dogg.

Despite the greatest advances in technology, DVD adaptation, downright plagiarism and holier-than-thou posturing, there is still one place few Directors in Bollywood dare to step through.

The deep, dark, scary realm of Horror.

The thought itself is scary, literally.
Let us face it, my Dear Constant Movie Fans. Our scary movies are downright hilarious.

The Gods that our Movie Moguls look up to for 'inspiration', (read Hollywood) have even diversified and packaged horror into neat little categories for easy consumption (Gothic, Slasher, Supernatural, Teen Terror, Serial Killer, Satanic...I could go on), while down here, we are still groping in the Dark. (Pretty funny, if you think about it).

And truth be told, there is but one man to thank for taking a bold step into that 'unknown, deep and dark place', unknown even to previous Box-Office results that bring home the money.

The one and only Ram Gopal Varma -You got to hand it to him.
For singlehandedly leading you safely by the hand into the bosom of your scariest nightmare and disappearing even before you realized that.

At a time, when all the horror you could watch in an Indian Horror movie was the reheated fare dished out by the dear Ramsay Brothers, where you were scared every moment for the Chief Vampire's ill-fitting fangs would fall out, or for the Mummy's scantily-clad cotton robes, RGV's Kaun was a breath of fresh air (or should I say, dank, fetid air?).

With no songs, three principal characters and 90 minutes, he had you by your 'family jewels', whether you liked it or not, if you watched Kaun.

Not for the technical brilliance of that movie( I still have my doubts on that), but for the fact that a Director from our land could give us something that had us interested, gripping our seats and mildly sweating, by the end of it all.Kaun came after Satya, one of the finest movies ever made on the dark life of Mumbai, and was a double whammy in the career graph of RGV. It also reinforced Anurag Kashyap's mettle as a brilliant craftsman of word, light and sound.

Interestingly, RGV's next outing into Horror was after Company, yet another gritty perspective of the Mumbai underbelly, called Bhooth.

For all those of you protest vehemently against another 'adaptation' of a lesser known Hong Kong flick, please give him a break, will you?

If it went on to win 10 Movie awards of 2004, and got nominated for another 9, surely, the better-educated fraternity must have seen something 'interesting' in the Movie, wouldn't they, partner?

The next 'pairing' came in 2005, after the Hindi remake release of his Telugu classic,'Shiva', which more or less sank without much debris.Touted as the sequel to Darna Mana Hai, where RGV was happy enough producing the movie, Darna Zaroori Hai, saw him taking matters into his own hands, keeping the same format of its prequel alive, which was another gleeful outing into horror for the Indian audience. It started off brilliantly and was more or less sputtering towards the end.(Hey, its my personal opinion Mate)

The Darna series was clearly inspired from the Tales from the Crypt series and the TV-series Are you afraid of the Dark, but it proved worthwhile for RGV, and the Indian audience. It was also alleged that that the 6th episode (Aftab Shivdasani & Isha Koppikkar) was inspired from a Twilight Zone episode, but hey, I'm not complaining.

Had watched the two, and should say RGV knew what he was doing, and he did it very well and so it comes to another 'pair' after two years, spang after an inter-galactic dud called Contract from the Factory.

Come to think of it, after Darna Zaroori Hai, RGV seemed to have lost himself in the heady success that built him as a brand.
  • Nishabd (2007)
  • Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag (2007)
  • Darling (2007)
  • Sarkar Raj (2008)
  • Contract (2008)
Five duds one after the other.

Irrespective of the brave face he puts out in the media, and the philosophy he pouts with the brashness that only success can bring, here is hoping Phoonk brings back the lost glory of Factory back into the National limelight.

There is already smirks and elbow-nudges about the movie being inspired from The Exorcist and the rest of the 'Posessed Child' horror genre, but I'm looking forward to this one.

Not because its an RGV movie.

But, for the fact that if you need a tingle up and down your spine, and find yourself crumpling up your popcorn bucket and probably gasping with a sheepish smile, you have only RGV to fall back on in India.

And as Stephen King, that Master of Horror, mentioned in one of his forewards, "Horror is spawned by Fear.Fear makes us blind, and we touch Fear with the avid curiosity of self-interest and fear is the only emotion that can make us Blind."

Over to you, RGV.

Anil Kapoor Anil Kapoor, the seasoned actor with oodles of calibre and experience discloses some of the bitchiest details of the film industry on Sajid’s Superstars, the new celebrity talk show on COLORS. Living by his philosophy — chill out, defrost and take it easy — the actor performs a jig with the dancers, setting a fun mood for the show right from the beginning.

Making fun of everyone, including themselves, the duo, share some up, close and personal moments. The tone of the show is set from the word go when Anil requests to be referred to as ‘Anu’ but not Anu Malik. A wicked Sajid instantly retorts that these days no one wants to be known as Anu Malik, not even Anu Malik himself.

The episode is fun and naughty where Anil takes potshots at everyone in the filmi duniya. He didn’t even spare his own brother, Bonny Kapoor, who he calls ‘(Sri)devi ka bhakt’. From SRK to Akshay Kumar to Farah Khan, nobody is spared.

With Sajid around, everyone gets naughty and haughty, so does Anil when, in a quiz, he asks Sanjay Dutt ‘How is it that you work out so much but I end up looking good?’

Sajid says, “This is a funfilled talk show. Here, I don’t show their past life and make my guests cry in a close-up shot. It’s not just a run-of-the-mill kind of a show. We are different. How different… that is for the viewers to decide. But one thing is for sure, I am, at no cost, going to let any of my bakras leave without having a rocking time.” To know what had been missing from the Indian television industry, viewers need to tune into Sajid’s Superstars on COLORS at 10 pm tonight.

Vidya Balan with wardrobe trouble

Vidya BalanThe bubbly Vidya Balan confesses to be confused these days. She just can’t dress up right. After being ripped to shreds by the media for her sense of dress in Heyy Baby, which she promptly blamed on designer Manish Malhotra, Vidya is amused to find that her clothes “have now become a national issue”. For instance, one day last week it was reported that she had turned out well-dressed at a party, only to be blasted in print the next time for not doing so. “I stand in front of my wardrobe, thoroughly confused, wondering what to wear next,” says Vidya going into peals of laughter.

Happily, she’s learned to take criticism in her stride. “I open the papers and there is always a reason for me to laugh some more,” admits the actress who has been linked with a torch-bearing Shahid Kapoor lately. “That’s another thing,” reveals Vidya, “it’s always Kapoor, Kapde aur Mein!” Yet, she accepts that her Parineeta image could be one reason why she has been getting flak for her western dressing. “But Lolita of Parineeta was just an image, she wasn’t the real Vidya Balan. This is me, this is how I am, take me for what I am,” pleads the actress.

And, if it’s not Shahid in her life, then it’s Southie Madhavan with whom Vidya’s chemistry is quite striking in the ad campaign they have done together. “We both get offers for at least four films a day, unfortunately we are both tied up,” says Vidya. Instead of Madhavan, the actress is doing a film with newcomer Harman Baweja next. “It’s Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film that also stars Amitabh Bachchan and I’m looking forward to working with them,” she reveals.

A Business lesson from Rajnikanth

Much has been written in these columns about the Magic from Madras (agreed, that was a desperate attempt in rhyme, but, who wouldn't, when it comes to that phenomenon called Rajnikant?).

Well, the Magic is back.
Kuselan releases today.

But contrary to the usual dose of Rajni that you want to get high on, there is a subtle shift in the whole proceedings.
Director P.Vasu, who managed to rework the Malayalam Classic Manichithrathazhu into a Rajni script (rechristened CHANDRAMUKHI)and help him make the usual muti-crore collections has unfailingly done his 'adaptation' to this refreshing original script too and NO one is complaining.

Because, you know that a Rajnikanth movie needs to be XXL sized, and scripts be damned.

Just the fact that Thalaivar is on screen is enough to qualify it technically as a movie.
And the longer, the better.
Kuselan was meant to be Rajnikanth's appetizer for his fans till Robot struts into town riding on its Rajni sized budget and magnitude.
And he has chosen cleverly, and wisely.Kuselan is also guaranteed to work its mystique (read lots of money) at the Box-Office, just like his previous venture Sivaji - The Boss.

You could raise your eyebrows at this point and ask, "Well, sport, when there is no sure shot formula for a Box-Office Hit in India, how could you make a statement like that?"
Well, the answer is deceptively simple.

It is taking an already successful formula, and repackaging it with the current needs and tastes in mind, designing an efficient marketing strategy around it and presto! The cash registers start singing high notes over and over again.
Its unfailingly simple in its strategy.
It works.
It works very well, partner.

More than an actor and a star, Rajnikanth is also an astute businessman.

An ethical, astute one at that. An efficient marketer who knows exactly what the audience expects from him and delivers it with panache.

You can do it one time and strike gold. You can maybe repeat it once more.
But to keep repeating that story with the same ending (as in Box-Office Blockbusters) needs a little forethought and some deviously clever skills too.

If you intend a Case Analysis of Rajnikanth's movies on Profits and Losses, as business enterprises, you will end up surprised and awed.
9 out of 10 times he has delivered more than expected in his ventures.
Baba is a bad memory.
(Hey, even Bill Gates had his Millennium edition that made even the hardcore coder weep and bawl).

With 60 minutes of screen time at a total worth of 60 Crore for the product.
Not bad,eh?
A Crore for a minute.

And its already sold, even before the preview is on at that theaters.
It is the current strategy, one these times demand, but think about it.
What more guarantees you need for a business enterprise than this?

To have your complete goods' net worth safely smiling in the bank even before the first packet reaches the shop floor.
Maybe after the Jubilee celebration of Kuselan, Thalaivar can take a different pilgrimage altogether.
Not to the Himalayas.
But to those A-List Business schools of the Nation and give them a little talk in orrey Rajni Style.
About how to run a successful Business enterprise.
Over and over gain.
Let them know that sometimes, a Masters in Business is not really required.
All one needs is some humility, ethics, an astute mind and a will to entertain.
Straight from the heart.

And critics be damned.

Cameron DiazActress Cameron Diaz is desperate for ‘a big bum’. The What Happens In Vegas star — famed for her slender figure — admits she would love to have a curvier posterior. She said: “I have an active lifestyle. I love to surf, snowboard, play golf and hike.

I also love to read a book, because that is mental athletics! Actually, I’d prefer to put on weight rather than lose it. I like women with curves. I want a big bum!” Cameron also revealed her inner confidence comes from her family praising her as she grew up. She added: “I was given a lot of confidence as a child, probably too much if you ask some people! I was always the troublemaker. It was definitely easier being the younger one. My poor sister had to go through all the trials first. Then my parents allowed me to do the things they never allowed her to do!”

Sonia Singh loves playing a Vamp

Sonia SinghSonia Singh, better known as Dr Kirti of the serial Dill Mill Gaye is overjoyed these days. The vampturned-good girl is busy livin’ it up to the rectitude of her reel-life character. “After a spate of negative roles, finally, I have got to play characters that have no vampish traits. I am enjoying every bit of it,” says the vivacious actress. Sonia says she’s enjoying every bit of her role as Dr Kirti. “It gives me a high whenever I am addressed as Dr Kirti, who is obsessed with discipline while at work, but is totally bindaas the moment she steps out of the hospital. I just love the different shades of her character,” says Sonia. And she adds that her long-time wish to do a double role has also come true, as she plays the character of Kanak in the serial Naagin.

The actress whose powerful performance as Kumkum’s daughter-in-law Antara earned her a nomination for favourite khalnayika at a recent awards show, feels it’s her curly hair and large, expressive eyes that make her an ideal choice for negative roles. “Whenever I have auditioned, the negative role would automatically come to me. To be honest, I enjoyed doing that to the hilt. It’s a challenge to play a vamp. There is a lot of scope to perform, play with the eyes and experiment with clothes and looks. I can’t play a dumb doll or do too much of rona-dhona like the sanskari bahu in the saasbahu serials,” chirps Sonia. But exposure and bold scenes are a strict no-no for her. That’s the reason she turned down an offer of a bold role with Amitabh Bachchan in a Bollywood flick recently. “It could have been the turning point in my career but I decided against it as the role demanded some very bold scenes. I steer clear of exposure. I want to be known for my acting skills,” says the actress. Sonia will soon be seen in a dance-based reality show. “Dance has always been a passion and this show will be a wonderful opportunity to utilise my talents,” she adds.

PartnerSupport for the currently beleaguered Salman Khan has come from unexpected quarters. The maverick MP-actor Govinda, who did Partner last year with Salman, is determined to fight for the macho actor until his last breath. “Salmanbhai is constantly under attack.

But, like me, he doesn’t retaliate to backbiting. So our detractors believe they can go on hitting us. Yet Salmanbhai is the hero of the masses,” says Govinda. And eager to keep a good thing going, Govinda declares that he will tie a black thread (“kissiki nazar na lage”) around their friendship.

The two are slated to return together on screen for a sequel to Partner in March 2009 to be directed David Dhawan. Sohail Khan will produce the sequel of the warring buddies that was borrowed from the Will Smith comedy Snitch. “This time, the film will be based on another idea,” says Govinda.

Kareena KapoorThis, it looks like, will be the big year of Kareena Kapoor. In her new avatar with size zero adding considerable oomph value to her drop-dead gorgeous looks, the actress is making heads turn internationally.

Last week at Universal Studio in LA, where she is shooting with Akshay Kumar for Sajid Nadiadwala’s Kambakkht Ishq, Kareena caught Hollywood legend Sylvester Stallone’s attention. The Rocky and Rambo actor, who has a bit part in the film, was taken in by her beauty and apparently has not stopped talking about the Indian actress.

Hollywood agents, quick to follow Stallone’s cue, began dropping in on Nadiadwala’s sets to check out Kareena and have been making inquires about her. Sources say the Bollywood hottie has had a few hush-hush meetings with some top Hollywood executives and is likely to be making a big career announcement soon.

When we asked Kareena about this, she replied noncommitally, “It’s the right time for Bollywood with so many avenues and doors opening up on a global scale. The possibilities are immense. I’m just keeping my fingers crossed.”

But it’s not only through Kambakkth Ishq that the actress has gone global. She recently did the cover of an international magazine for
which she was styled by Nicole Kidman’s stylist Desiree and shot by famous fashion photographer Trevor Leighton. Besides, international R&B and pop icon Sean Kingston has also mentioned her as Bollywood’s numero uno in the remake of his chartbuster Beautiful Girls, now named Bollywood Girls.

Imagine this - one morning you wake up and realize that for some strange reason, you seem to know exactly what's going to happen to you throughout the day. You know you are going to miss the bus to work, you know you are going to miss the meeting you have been preparing for, you know you are going to get only broccoli for lunch at your favorite restaurant and you know that you are going to get back home dejected after a long day.

How does that make you feel? Like staying back at home and not stepping out at all right? This is exactly the feeling one gets after watching Kismat Konnection.

The above is not the story line of the film but the reaction to the film. There is no mystery in the film, no excitement and one always knows what the next 15 minutes are going to be like. Blame it on the pace (which is unbearably slow) or the lack of screenplay - Kismat Konnection lacks everything that a good film (not even great) is made of.

In all fairness, the story line was unique and could have taken the shape of a light, hearty romantic comedy. But what is a rom-com where neither the dialogues nor the dialogue delivery was looked into? I really fail to understand what happened to Aziz Mirza's Kismat when he was making this movie.

For the man responsible for great ventures like Circus, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman and Yes Boss, it is almost sad that a Kismat Konnection has now been connected to his portfolio.

The newest 'hush' couple of Tinsel Town was unable to fire up the screen which finally makes me believe that there might be some truth after all when Vidya Balan and Shahid Kapoor claim they are not together. There was more chemistry between Kajol and Amir Khan in Fanaa than there was between Shahid and Vidya. Not only did they not look good together, they didnt even act well together.

And why just them, great actors like Om Puri and Boman Irani seemed wasted in this film. And the biggest surprise - Juhi Chawla - Aziz Mirza's lucky charm, Kismat Konnection's 'charm'-ing lady was anything but that. Haseena Banu Jaan was annoying and highly irritating and Juhi Chawala too, like all others, was completely wasted. SRK was lucky that he only lent his voice to the film and nothing else - the King of Khans, the Badshah of Bollywood would have lost face, had he shown his face in the film. Finally a good decision there Shahrukh!

The music might score a 3 on 10, all 3 points going to "Aai Paapi, Oye Papiya" and only for the first 3 times that you hear this song. Listen to it the 4th time and you want to either break your head or the music system. Even Pritam who created magic with Race was unable to take the film to its crescendo.

The characterization left a lot to be desired as well. First of all, why would Shahid even be paired with Vidya? Vidya doesn't look like his mother of course but she doesn't look like his dainty lady love, lucky charm either. Her arms would be bigger than Shahid's biceps. Her Western Avtar made her look like a BTM (Behenji turned modern). Her same old "save the old" was more than a cliché and her tears of betrayal was a cut-copy-paste from Munnabhai.

Shahid looks ok - actually his hair look awesome and he dances like there's no tomorrow but even then, he does not look like a Time Magazine prospect. A younger and cheaper SRK as he might be, he really needs to quickly find a unique niche style of his own otherwise he will end up being just a cute, sniggering boy for who only the heroines will end up being competition.

All in all, Kismat Konnection fails to excite - not just the audience but also the crew members I think - no wonder no one seemed to have got anything right.

Simple is Beautiful - Jaane tu ya jaane na?

It's been 4 days since the movie released. It's been 40 days since people have been talking about it. Its easily going to be 400 days till the magic is going to wear off (or not).

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na is indeed a pleasure to watch.

We all know the story is nothing new, nothing great. Its college romance, the same Kucch Kucch Hota Hai friendship, the same Jab We Met realization of true feelings after its kinda late and the same chasing the heroine right into the airport as every other hindi movie.Yet Jaane Tu captured hearts, left people wanting more, kept the glint in the eyes even as everyone walked down the staircase of the theatre.

What was the magic that Jaane Tu managed to create? Well, there obviously would be various points of view here but I would say it was its 'simplicity'.

Starting from the star cast to clothes to emotions to slice of life depiction - everything was spun around simplicity and therefore woven in reality.

Imran Khan - the next BIG thing to happen to Bollywood was an adorable young college kid, the Aamir Khan from QSQT and yet very very simple. His demeanor was simple, his dialogues were simple, even his character was simple, without complications, calling a spade a spade. In our daily complications, who would not like to see such un-complex kids chasing LOVE that we adults seem to have left behind a long time ago.

Genelia was also a surprise. After her really annoying performances in Masti and Mere Baap Pehle Aap, she was quite a treat. Not hot, not sexy, but simple and sweet. That was Genelia in Jaane Tu and honestly, she looked so fresh and charming that her previous tortures can easily be forgiven now.

The rest of the crew was equally adorable and amazing, what with Naseeruddin Shah acting from his frames and Ratna Pathak with her frames! The descent of the gorgeous Anuradha Patel onto the silver screen again couldn't have been done more justice.

And why just the crew, the few emotions that were depicted in the film was so real yet dreamy that I couldn't think of another movie in recent times that has understood the youth this well and given them what they are and what they want.

Cool parents, annoying brother- but a brother nevertheless, friends throwing surprise parties constantly, gossip, the flavor of Mumbai (even through Inspector Waghmare) and all the small pieces that got together to make this movie were commendable -All real and yet the dreams that most youngsters dream of today.

All in all, Jaane tu... was a pleasure.

We were three 27 year olds who had gone to watch the movie and we each came back sighing, with stars in our eyes and hope all over again (never mind the fact that while one of us wanted to marry Imran, but of course, another one wanted to adopt him).

Yearning for college life again, living those days of no-nonsense, following the heart and finding that innocent love - that's what the movie did to us - Maane tu ya mane na.

You will get ads only when advertisers want to send advertisements to you.
For this to happen, two things must happen:
a. Advertisers must first want to advertise on service, a new medium. Since it is a new medium advertisers are approaching slowly. Many are not even aware that service exists. They are taking time.
b. Those advertisers who do sign-up must want to target you. Advertisers target you based on your interests, location, age, gender, salary, occupation and many more parameters. If you do not suit their criteria, they will not send their ad to you.

When you selected the " Max. Number of ads per day" as 10 (or 7 or 5 etc), it is only your preference. It does not mean that you will surely get 10 ads every day. It only means that the maximum that you can ever get on a single day is 10. On some days you might not receive even a single ad, on others you might receive a few but not exceeding your preference.

Service doesn't claim that it will send you any particular number of advertisements every day. Please understand that service is just a medium. When advertisers come, you will get ads, when they don't you will not get ads.

Please do not get carried away by the hype. Here is the reality: the money you will make from service will in most cases for a long time not be much. The value of the service is not in the money you make directly from service but in the valuable, relevant information that you get.

It will take a long time before we can get enough advertisers on a regular basis to send you even 10% of your max preference ads. This whole industry is a baby. Out of Rs. 16,000 Crores spent every year on advertising not even 0.005% is spent on mobile advertising. So, your guess is as good as ours on how long it will take to move some of this spend to mobile.

So, this is what we have to say to you: You will see very few ads on our network for some time (how long? Maybe 4 months, 6 months, we can?t say), have patience, stick to us, we are trying our best to attract advertisers.

How I was Sarkar Raj’d into disorientation

I am expecting brickbats this time around.
Loads of them.
Plus invectives, mind-numbing gaalis and a delightful assortment of abuses and the end of it.

Sarkaar Raj should NEVER have happened.

No, this is not equating it to the frightening level of His Highness RGV's last outing called RGV Ki Aag, also fondly referred to, by a majority of movie fans as RGV ki AAAAAAAAAAAARRGGGGGGGGHH.

Simply put, Sarkaar Raj to me was jarring, predictable and at times purely disorienting.

Yes, am prepared for those raised eyebrows, sneers, frothing tempers and how-dare-you-criticize- that-acting-encyclopedia-called-Big B cussing and curses.

But, I still choose to stand by what I said.

After the debacle of rehashing one of the Nation's best loved Classics, RGV chose to go back to the drawing board and start on what he knew best.

Crafting the 'Factory' brand of noir movies, with earthy dialogues, pithy characterisations, and a dark and taut feel to the whole storyline.

But, I guess, RGV took it too far this time around.

There is absolutely no argument about the craftsmanship and the technical perfection that has gone into the production. The production values are dizzyingly high, the shots have been painstakingly fixed to reinforce the mood of the story all the way till the last shot, and the dialogue deliveries have that stifled, mumbling cadence that somehow seems to blend with the half-dark scene settings.

Unfortunately, THAT seems to be the whole problem.

It was as if, in every scene, RGV was trying very hard to be RGV, with self-imposed quality and technical standard levels that seemed to be kept so dizzyingly high that at times it gave you vertigo.
Come on, this is a movie.
After all, this is about taking the legacy of Sarkaar forward, in the great tradition of sequels that usually aim to do.

If you are somebody who has been closely following his movies, (no, am NOT talking about the summer projects that were released in the name of Factory by people who couldn't distinguish a camera from a camcorder), even with an I Mac and flashlight, you know what I'm talking about, when it comes to technical prowess here.

It is expected that when RGV makes his trademark noire genre, you can expect the best.

Sarkaar Raj looks as if RGV got insecure with himself, as if he lost his grip on his movie making skills and suddenly chose to raise those bars so high that left the viewer dizzy and reeling.

Ms.Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, other than being delectable scenery material, as accompanying live prop to Real-life Husband ( Abhishek Bachchan, if you please), doesn't have much to do in the movie.

It is clearly AB's movie. Whether you like it or not.

AB Jr's face doesn't graduate above the scowl, which seem to be surgically implanted till his 'Last' scene.
(Is it a Constitutional by-Law that you have to be brooding, scowling and seen simmering all through out your life, if you happen to be the son of a Godfather? I'm puzzled).

AB is at his best, at home with his liquid baritone, holding every frame like the Patriarch he is.

It was as if every single scene was painfully constructed to end in a punch-line, either by Sarkaar or Sarkaar Junior,s o much so, it felt very unnatural to have a scene which didn't end up that way.

And the Background Score was an experience.

On how not to do a background score for a movie.

Ethnic, earthy folk bites and chants cleverly weaved into the sonic ambiance is a good idea. No doubt about it. But, it shouldn't constantly keep screeching at your nerve endings for every second fleeting emotion conveyed on screen that you almost end up thinking."If I pray hard enough for the next two minutes, will this background score go away? Please God, I paid 250 bucks for this. Please let me not have a brain aneurysm at the end of this. You too are watching this, aren't you Lord?"

The sequel ends with the premise of a sequel in the great tradition of sequels.
Also known as milking the franchise dry.

There is a brilliantly crafted scene at the end of the movie where the stoic yet broken Patriarch does a soliloquy in front of AB Junior's photograph ( Dear Lord, did I give the ending away?). That scene, more or less, best explains the paradox of the movie.

Of the technical mastery of a craftsman who takes himself too far out ,even beyond the accommodating sensibilities of his audience.

So, you may ask, how is the movie?
Is it worth my time?

All I can safely say is this.

' Watch it for the sheer technical perfection of the movie, and for AB.
And if you concentrate hard all along, somewhere along that dizzying collection of scenes, is a story, gasping, and desperately trying to come to life.'

Dear RGV, if this is the same 'treatment' that you have decided for that last part of the Sarkaar Trilogy you have, in one of those dark corners of your creative mind, would you please lend a ear to a suggestion from a Constant Movie Fan?

DON'T DO IT!

For the love of God, PLEASE!.

The dozen Avatars of Kamal Hassan

Well, for all practical purposes, the dozen avatars is an understatement.

For that matter, anything about the professional career of Kamalhaasan is an understatement.

Take a minute to let this sink in.

  • 4 NATIONAL AWARDS,
  • 18 FILMFARE AWARDS,
  • 2 BEST ACTOR AWARDS in THE ASIAN FILM FESTIVALS,
  • 7 OFFICIAL ENTRIES to OSCARS representing the Nation,
  • The title of LIVING LEGEND, conferred by FICCI last year.
All this for donning on a different avatar each time, for that two hour on Celluloid, transporting you into another time and place, sometimes exaggerated, at times, gritty and exquisitely moving.

But regardless of the scope and inaneness of the roles he played, you sat through till the closing credits rolled up in front of you, part moved by the character, part in awe of the phenomenon who magically slips into the skin of the character he portrays in each movie. As effortlessly as a chameleon.

Maybe that epithet suits him to the 'T' - Kamal, the Consummate Chameleon.

For someone who donned that 'skin' for the first time, all of 6 years, way back in 1960, in the august company of another legend, Shivaji Ganeshan, maybe these recognitions are immaterial.

The very fact that the Indian Government awarded him the National Award for the Best Child Artiste for that very outing, was a portent of things to come.

That, for all practical purposes, ladies and gentlemen, the Consummate Chameleon for the Indian Celluloid
has arrived.
Yours truly believes the actual attempts in 'noticeable' impersonation, came along with the groundbreaking (literally!) Apoorva Sagodarangal, which had the Chameleon playing the role of a midget, a "virtually impossible feat" for the times it was released.

And along came the dual roles in Indrudu Chandrudu, and its Tamil remake, with the grotesqueness and voice modulation of the principal character that sent many a shiver down the Constant Fan's spine.

And from double roles in Indrudu Chandrudu and triple roles in Apoorva Sagodarangal, Kamalhaasan, it seems went all cylinders firing, making a mockery of the whole genre of the same actor populating the screen in different roles, with the ultimate crazy caper called Michael Madana Kamarajan, with four brothers 'separated at birth, and reuniting in a tottering wooden bunglow on the edge of the cliff with some serious gravity issues.

Conceived to be the ultimate spoof on 'Lost-and-Found' saga of Bollywood, the movie was more noticed for the hilarious puns and slapstick action scripted by Crazy Mohan. (Guess the name explains it all).

The next major 'plastic' outing came with Indian, with the dual roles of freedom fighter father and his slimy, crooked son, and it was a double bonanza. Of having venturing into his full fledged vocation of playing with 'faces", the roles also brought him the National Award for the Best Actor.

Mrs.Doubtfire in a Kanjeevaram was next in line, christened Avvai Shanmughi. Though the inspiration was lying around for everyone to see (Robin Williams, if you please), Kamalhaasan molded the concept and made it entirely Indian and his own, and had the whole country jive along with this 'hip and hip-shaking Paatty', in its two versions (Hindi and Tamil).

Though Hey Ram was a washout at the Box-office, the sheer artistry and technical perfection would not be easily forgotten by anyone who has watched the movie.

Aalavandan ( a movie adaption of his own novel called Dayam), more or less followed the footsteps of Hey Ram, but for the psychotic Nandu, a bizarre and exaggerated portrayal of the manic levels of the human mind.

And now Dashavatharam in 2008.

From Kalathur Kannamma in 1960 to Dashavatharam in the starry present, this Chameleon has come a long way.

Changing hues at the ease of a thought and a flicker, he still continues to amaze us, with his loud and exaggerated portrayals on one hand and the subdued and terribly poignant ones on the other.

When you closely look at the range of 'faces' that he had donned for the camera, you also slowly realize that at times its just that he creates a story around a face, make that Live in the story and try make you believe in it just the same.

Some nosedive into the Box-office dustbin, and other soar.

But, regardless of the outcome, he is around, ready with his next skin.
Guess after a while, the net results become relative to a 'character', who has been in the arc lights since the tender age of 6 years. A time while the rest of us usually get busy chasing butterflies or getting dunked in puddles, Master Kamalhaasan was receiving the Nation's Highest Award for emoting by an 'actor' in that age category.

Its no wonder that after a while, you reach a stage beyond comparisons, beyond the seamy eyes of Box-Office successes and failures.

When Time magazine hailed Nayagan, as one of the Top 100 movies of all times, they were making a point.

That, even the world has realized and recognized, the consummate ease at which this Chameleon changes his colors.

And if you want further proof, well, get ready for an overdose.

Ten times around. On June 13th,2008. And be convinced...
